What inflation means

Inflation refers to a sustained increase in the general price level over time. It does not mean that every product rises by the same amount, or that every individual experiences exactly the same change in living costs.

💰 Purchasing-power intuition: If prices rise while your ₹1,000 remains ₹1,000, that amount generally buys fewer goods and services than before.

What exams may test

Know the difference between a price level and its rate of change, the idea of purchasing power, and the broad distinction between consumer and wholesale price measures. For current inflation readings, use dated official data rather than a static number embedded here.

🧠 Recall: Inflation ↑ → purchasing power of a fixed amount of money generally ↓, all else equal.
